Lab grown diamonds are as real as they come, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg…

What are lab-grown diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds share the same chemical and optical properties of natural diamonds. You might be familiar with how natural diamonds are made. A diamond is comprised of the mineral carbon created by nature that takes over a billion years to form. Imagine expediting that process to create a diamond, but in a shorter period of time. We have to love technology!

Lab-grown diamonds are the same as natural diamonds, except they are produced in laboratories instead of in nature.

The advancement of technology has enable scientists to recreate a diamond’s natural growth in a highly controlled environment by simulating the geological conditions in which natural diamonds are formed: UNDER INTENSE PREASURE AND HEAT. Awesome right?

Are lab-grown diamonds real?

YES!

“Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition and crystal structure as diamonds created by nature.”

-By G.I.A (Gemological Institute if America)

How are lab-grown diamonds made?

As of now there are only 2 methods of growing diamonds in laboratories:

HPHT: High pressure high temperature.

This method produces diamonds by planting a small diamond seed in pure carbon, which is then placed under a press in what’s essentially an oven, to mimic how diamonds are naturally grown in the earth.

CVD: Chemical vapor deposition.

The modern technique of growing a gem-quality diamonds, using less pressure and moderate temperatures. Are you impressed yet?

CVD allows for finer control over chemical impurities, in order to make a better diamond. There’s also more flexibility and simplicity than HPHT, but it takes longer to produce.

The sustainable side of it, lab-grown diamonds vs natural diamonds.

Let’s break it down:

Lab-Grown

Natural Diamonds

Consumes approximately 18 gallons of water per carat. Consumes at least 126 gallons of water per carat.
On average, a one carat lab-grown diamond requires 75 kilowatts per hour to produce. Extracting mined diamonds requires 149.58 kilowatts per hour for each carat.

Is this making you think now?

Simply put…

A diamond is a diamond whether it’s mined from the earth or created from the lab. Both natural and lab diamonds are judged on four criteria, known as the FOUR C’s.

And now you can choose, how it’s made doesn’t change its beautiful and icy nature.
